Strega Nona

I bought a few books by Tomie dePaola sometime ago for Marissa and Evan. The books are a series featuring Strega Nona. Marissa loves listening to the stories of Strega Nona. On the other hand, Evan wasn't that keen. Oh well, he is very content with his Manga Metamorphosis & Manga Mutiny books.

As for me, I am sooooo into the cute illustrations and stories! I love all the illustrations by Tomie dePaola in all his books! Feel like collecting all of them!

In case you are wondering....Strega is the Italian word for witch. Strega Nona is actually a 'grandma witch' beloved by the townsfolk of Calabria (a region in southern Italy). Strega Nona provides relief for headaches, cures warts on noses and restores hair to bald heads. She also helps in matchmaking young girls and boys of marriageable age.

Strega Nona owns a magic pasta pot inherited from her Grandma Concetta who was also a strega. Big Anthony is her helper who tends to the goats and feeds the peacock. He is a very forgetful and silly person - and he gets into trouble whenever he doesn't pay attention. The illustration below shows Big Anthony serving pasta from the magic pasta pot.

All the stories contain common Italian words and most importantly there's a lesson to be learnt.

Manga Messiah

This is a blog post by dear hubby Larry:

Evan was never really into his children and toddler Bibles. Turning 4 years old, he was more attracted to action packed cartoons/comics such as Spider-Man, Ben 10 and Power Rangers, especially the fighting scenes. His vocabulary includes words like ‘kill,’ ‘die,’ destroy,’ and ‘explode.’ Of course, we as parents are to blame to expose an impressionable kid to violent scenes albeit animated ones.

As a child my own father encouraged me to watch action flicks and wrestling shows in order for me to learn some self-defense moves. Thankfully I didn’t encounter any bullies in my childhood, and I remain a passive viewer to action films, which my father regards as educational for me. Therefore I didn’t realize that action cartoons would bring such a negative effect to my son. Since discovering that action cartoons make Evan more aggressive (he would jump around in the house ‘fighting bad guys’ using his toys as ‘weapons’), we got him to quit watching those cartoons.

His behavior has improved since he stopped watching those shows. But he still shows no interest towards the stories in children Bibles. I suspect the pictures in the children’s Bibles are too docile to excite a child who likes to watch action cartoons.

Fortunately, we manage to come across Manga Messiah, a comicbook on the Gospels illustrated in manga style. Since the day we bought the comicbook, Evan would want me to read it to him before sleep every night, without fail. He likes Jesus who he regards as ‘powerful,’ ‘able to help people’ and ‘do miracles’. I think it’s wonderful that Evan has finally found a true Hero to emulate.

The corny title aside, Manga Messiah (MM) is a surprisingly well-written and illustrated book. Although it’s intended for non-church-going teenagers who are not inclined to pick up a Bible, it will also equally capture the attention of a Sunday Schooler as well as an adult familiar with the Bible.

MM combines the four Gospels (Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) into a singular narrative spanning 23 chapters in 287 full-colour pages. It is quite a faithful adaption of the Gospels. Every page includes the chapter and verse of the story being told.

It is written and drawn by a Japanese mangaka team. The English translation is very good and at times employs American expressions (e.g. “Man! That is low!” said a disciple when he discovered James and John’s mother’s personal request to Jesus.) The paraphrase is well done akin to the New Living Translation and New Century Version. The illustrations employ typical manga style character appearances and facial expressions. This manages to convey action and dynamism in the stories.

MM fleshes out the Gospel stories quite well and make it more readable. Case is in point: Matthew 9:9. In the Bible, Jesus called to Matthew the tax collector, and the latter simply drops everything and follows the Lord.  A bit too abrupt if you ask me. In MM, Matthew is first shown overhearing people exclaiming the miraculous things that Jesus had done. Then Matthew’s thoughts reveal that he is despised, unwanted, unloved and alone. So when Jesus pops the question, ‘Follow me,’ it is so much more believable that Matthew will quit his job just like that.

MM makes most everything easy to understand. Specific cultural practices and norms are explained in the course of the story, helping us to make sense of what’s happening. And I must say that despite having read the Gospels and looking at maps of the Biblical regions in numerous Bibles, I only fully grasp the distinction of the three regions of Galilee, Samaria and Judea after reading MM.

I’m really impressed by the overall quality of the manga and most importantly, the Gospel is told clearly in a manner that’s appealing to the younger generation. Evan simply adores the stories about Jesus and listens intently when I read it to him before bedtime. I also get him to recite some noteworthy scripture verses.

Manga Messiah is published by Tyndale and is available at Salvation bookstores for RM20. It’s sister titles Manga Metamorphosis (about the Book of Acts) and Manga Mutiny (Genesis & Exodus) are also sold there.

My Big Bookworm

Since I have blogged about my 'little' bookworm, I will now also blog about my 'big' bookworm. He's pictured here with one of his favourite books (he has so many favourites!) : Charlie Cook's Favourite Book by Julia Donaldson.

The book is about Charlie Cook who reads his favourite book and in his book he reads about a pirate who has a favourite book which is about Goldilocks. And in Goldilocks' story, she reads her favourite book which is about a knight. This goes on and on with many favourite books till Charlie Cook becomes a story himself read by a ghost. Sounds pretty confusing, huh? But Evan loves reading the different 'books' in this book. The text is well written in verse/rhyme and the illustrations are humorous!

Evan's favourite pages are the ones featuring the pirate, knight and the thief. This paperback book includes an audio CD which Evan listens to in the car. He can even sing the song as well!

My Little Bookworm

If I were to take part in the Little Bookworm Contest.... this would be my entry.... heheheh.....
Introducing..... Marissa with her absolutely favourite all-time book : The Very Hungry Caterpillar by acclaimed author/illustrator : Eric Carle! This is a board book & plush toy set.

Whenever Marissa wants me to read the book with her, she will grab the caterpillar and show it to me saying "read! read!". So I get the book from the shelf and sit with her to read.
"egg!" says Marissa pointing to the first page. Then when we come to the page where the caterpillar (who hatched from the egg) is very very very hungry, there's a spread of various food on the pages. This is when Marissa gets into action with her plush caterpillar.
"yummy, yummy, yummy" she says while her caterpillar 'eats' the strawberries, apple, pear, ice cream, sausage, etc etc etc.
"eat! eat!" as she continues stuffing her plush toy with more food!
When the drama is over, the caterpillar turns into a cocoon. This is when she will say "fat". Yeah - fat caterpillar and fat cocoon. Then the last page shows a beautiful butterfly.

I've since bought more books from Eric Carle for her but this one remains her favourite.

The Gruffalo

Currently Evan's favourite bedtime stories are from award-winning author : Julia Donaldson & illustrator : Axel Scheffler. I purchased these 2 paperback books at a warehouse sale some time back - feeling lucky to have found them there in the midst of the madness associated with warehouse sales!

The Gruffalo tells the story of a Little Brown Mouse who walks through the deep dark wood. The entire book is told in rhymes and makes it very easy for kids to remember the story. Evan could even tell the story just by looking at the illustrations.
Well, back to the mouse, he was a cunning little fellow who made up the so-called monster : The Gruffalo so as to scare away his predators. Later, the mouse got a huge shock when his make-believe monster actually exists and threathens to eat him up! But the cunning mouse has more tricks up his sleeve! I won't reveal the ending but it's really such an interesting read even for me as an adult.

This is the other book that I mentioned - the sequel to The Gruffalo : The Gruffalo's Child. Brilliant as well. Evan loves this book too and he will sometimes 'read' the book to his grandparents instead of the book being read to him.

This is another book : paperback as well : The Gruffalo's Song & other Songs. The CD contains several of Julia Donaldson's songs sung and performed by herself. Evan's favourite is of course The Gruffalo's song. The lyrics are actually from the books describing the Gruffalo.

Since he enjoyed the Gruffalo so much, I decided to buy another highly acclaimed book from Julia Donaldson : Room on the Broom. Managed to find the paperback version of the book in mint condition from 1 Utama MPH during the Jimat Sales. Sometimes it can be really hard to find books in mint condition as most would be damaged/shows major shelf wear. True enough, Evan enjoyed Room on the Broom too ( I did too!). So it looks like I will be getting more books from Julia Donaldson in the future! Will try to get more copies for sale in my ebay store as well (sold 4 Julia Donaldson books already so far.... all sold out!). Other series I am looking at are Charlie & Lola books by Lauren Child.
